Tells in Poker
The concept of tells in poker is so well understood that most people do not even think about it, they just use it. Tells is when a player gives away some information about the hand they are holding. Everyone looks for tells in their opponent's play. If you can get a hint of what they are holding you can use that information to make a determination about whether to raise, stay or fold. Tells can help you win more pots. You can not count on tells but you should get good at reading them when they are being given.
It is equally important to know if you have any tells and stop them. Everyone has tells of some kind, it is just human nature. Some people will go to great extremes to mask their tells and some will go to a lot of work to provide a tell that indicates one thing when they are actually thinking another. All of these tells go together to provide an overall picture of how a player acts. If a player acts like they have a bad hand and it turns out that they had a great hand that is a tell in its own right. They can not use that tell more than once and get away with it. Some people develop a shake or an eye twitch when they are bluffing. Being able to read people is very helpful in poker and it just takes practice. Many professional players like to wear dark glasses because they known they can not hide tells in their eyes.
A tell can be incredibly subtle like watching a pot to make sure all players are putting in the right amount because the watcher has a winning hand and does not want to be cheated. If you start watching your opponents closely you will start to pick up on the subtleties of their behavior and that will get you started on thinking about what you are giving away. Reading tells takes time and patience but is well worth the time and effort. Your winnings will show it and your play will improve.
